When you send an encrypted or signed email, a pop-up will request your PIN. I do not personally recommend the DOD add-on for Thunderbird or Firefox as I have had issues with it detecting my CAC. You can change default preferences regarding signing and encryption here. To use the CAC to sign emails in Thunderbird, assuming your AKO email is already set up, select “Account Settings” from the “Edit” menu and select “Security” under your AKO account. Occasionally you will have to attempt log in twice. Note that not all military websites work perfectly with Firefox. I have not included screen shots of these steps due to security and copyright concerns. Navigate to the military website you wish to log into and select “CAC Login.” You should be prompted for your PIN and then to select which certificate to use, much like on Windows. You will receive errors, and, as in Firefox, these can be ignored. For each of the three files you downloaded, click the “Import” button, select the file, and select the top two options presented by the pop-up dialogue. Click “View Certificates.” Select the “Authorities” tab. Click the “Advanced” button, then select the “Certificates” tab. In Thunderbird, select “Preferences” from the “Edit” menu.
